Shi Meiyu: Courageous Woman of Faith God desires Shi Meiyu: Courageous Woman of Faith

God desires to use every aspect of our lives for His glory, including our professional lives. Whether you are a teacher, mechanic, cashier, server, bookkeeper, or even a doctor (like Shi Meiyu), God desires for you to embrace a life of grace and share His love with others.

Shi Meiyu, also known as Mary Stone, was born into a Christian family in China in 1873. Her father was a pastor, and her mother was the principal of a Christian girls’ school. She grew up in the faith, and that impacted her outlook and purpose in life.

One aspect of her purpose was medicine. She was one of the first Chinese women to become trained in Western medicine, earning a degree from the University of Michigan and doing postgraduate work at Johns Hopkins University.

But Shi Meiyu knew her greater purpose was serving God. She embraced her life of grace as a medical missionary. She started multiple hospitals, schools, and churches throughout China. She translated textbooks and manuals from English to Chinese and trained over 500 Chinese nurses in nursing AND the Bible.

We encourage you to take some time today to research this amazing woman and her journey of courage. How does her story of using all God gave her inspire you to embrace a life of grace and share His love with others?

88% percent of Americans own at least one Bible, y 88% percent of Americans own at least one Bible, yet recent studies conclude that very few actually read it or know how to apply it to their lives.

Therefore, the crisis in the United States today is not a lack of access to God’s Word, as in some countries; instead, it’s a lack of knowledge of what God’s Word actually says.

Additionally, many of us, when we do begin reading and studying God’s Word, incorporate our own beliefs, preferences, and traditions into our study.

Regardless of whether we learned these beliefs, preferences, and traditions from family members, childhood acquaintances, and/or spiritual mentors, we must challenge and test them against the truth of the Bible, so we do not adopt misinformation about God and His Word.

Therefore, it is critically important we become properly grounded in our view of God and His Word and develop reliable observation, interpretation, and application skills in order to understand the Bible more accurately and apply God's Word more properly.

Do you study the Bible? What is your favorite Bible study method?

These four Bible study steps allows us to interpre These four Bible study steps allows us to interpret and apply God's Word to our daily lives more accurately. There are many ways we can study the Bible, but the below is our favorite method.

PRAY 🙏
As you approach God's Word, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth. Ask God to open your heart and mind to His truth and give you wisdom and discernment as you study His life-giving Word. Thank God for giving you His Word as a lamp unto your and a light unto your path.

OBSERVE 👀
Ask the question, "What does the text say?"
Read the passage in context. It's best to start at least at the beginning of a chapter, remembering that the original authors did not write in chapters and verses. Still, they included natural breaks and transitions, and most of the time, the chapter headings follow these. As you read, ask yourself who, what, when, where, why, and how questions.

INTERPRET 🤔
Ask the question, "What does the text mean?"
Throughout the Bible, God communicates timeless life lessons that apply to everyone at any time, place, or circumstance. Timeless biblical principles were true for the original biblical audience, have remained true throughout the history of the world, and will remain true forever. As you read, look to identify these timeless biblical principles.

APPLY 🙋‍♀️
Ask the question, "What do I need to do?"
Remember, our goal in Bible study is not just to acquire knowledge but to become transformed by the Word into the image of Christ. Once we have identified the timeless life lessons, we can apply them to our everyday lives.

Have you studied the Bible this way? What is your favorite way to study God's Word?
