What underlying issues are creating obstacles for What underlying issues are creating obstacles for you?

Typically, four common culprits are to blame for many of the problems we face. We call these culprits the "four pests of pressure."

We all struggle with them at various times. The problem is, we’re often afraid to talk about them, and the less we talk about them, the more control they have over us.

(( Fear ))
Fear manifests itself in various ways. In a healthy sense, fear functions as an internal alarm system, alerting us when danger is present. But fear can also be the overpowering internal motivator.

(( Hurt ))
We’ve all experienced hurt at one time or another. If we allow it to, hurt can even become a pattern we get stuck in. We relive our hurts over and over again in our minds.

(( Sin ))
Sin is sneaky; it’s always lurking in the background, waiting for just the right moment to influence our decisions, desires, behaviors, actions, and relationships.

(( Shame ))
Author Brené Brown, who specializes in the research of shame and vulnerability, said, “Shame is an intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and, therefore, unworthy of love and belonging.”

What can you do today to combat these four pests of pressure? Recognizing them in your life is key.

1. Spend quiet time with God. Pray for wisdom and discernment to recognize the obstacles that hinder you. Take out your notebook or journal and list the obstacles you need to overcome. Listen attentively to God and ask him for guidance as you strive to overcome your obstacles.

2. Beside each obstacle, list one or more of the four pests of pressure (fear, hurt, sin, or shame) you believe are likely contributing to your obstacles.

Mahalia Jackson: Courageous Woman of Faith "I Ha Mahalia Jackson: Courageous Woman of Faith

"I Have a Dream" is one of the most influential speeches of all time. But did you know Mahalia Jackson not only sang at the 1963 March on Washington, but some have credited her for sparking part of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech?

Many have written how Mahalia shouted from the crowd, "Tell them about the dream, Martin!" before he launched into an improvised version of his speech. Whether he heard her or not, no one could deny how Dr. King's poised speech transformed into a powerful sermon… and the rest is history.

Mahalia's history is a compelling story of a courageous woman of faith. She grew up in a devout Christian family. She sang in her local church before becoming one of the greatest gospel singers of all time. Mahalia's life is marked by immense courage in how she broke barriers and overcame obstacles.

We encourage you to take some time today to research this amazing woman and her journey of courage and perhaps listen to a few of her powerful songs. Dr. King once said, "A voice like hers comes along once in a millennium."
