How to Know if You Are Teachable

May 4, 2018

Did you know having a teachable attitude makes us more likable by others, reduces conflicts in our life, grows us spiritually, personally and relationally, and gives us the ability to make positive changes in our life?

“The know-it-all never esteems the one who tries to correct him. He refuses to seek good advice from the wise.”Proverbs 15:12

You’re teachable if you are open to correction, inquisitive, listen well, and apply what you learn. If you have a desire to change, grow, learn and process information, even if it is contradictory to your own perceptions and beliefs. You are teachable if you’re open to considering other points of view.

Humility is the avenue to salvation and freedom. Humility activates God’s grace in our life.

To be teachable we must first become humble. Humility is one of the great paradoxes of Christianity. It’s the absence of self, leaving room for God’s Spirit and presence to be demonstrated in and through us, “…Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” Matthew 10:38-39. Humility is having an unassuming attitude, “… Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Romans 12:3

Humility doesn’t mean having a critical or negative opinion of our self, but a reasonable attitude toward ourselves that understands and sees with relative clarity what we truly are according to God’s Word. Therefore, it positions us to have a need to learn. If we have no need to learn from others, then we have a prideful disposition, and“God opposes the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

Pride keeps us from being open and enables stubbornness and a defiance to change. Pride is unreceptive, it reveals insecurity, and often displays and stirs up anger.

“Wisdom opens your heart to receive wise counsel, but pride closes your ears to advice and gives birth to only quarrels and strife.” Proverbs 13:10

If we are truly a disciple of Christ then we must become a disciplined learner. We must have a deep appreciation of God’s Word and His wisdom, and have a yearning to know more about Him and His ways. God’s Word nurtures growth and change. If we are teachable, we’ll lean in and listen and learn from others. The more we apply what we learn, the more change will occur in our lives spiritually, personally, and in our relationships.

“If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow

in understanding”. Proverbs 15:32

Are you teachable, or do you need to be more intentional about opening yourself up to hear, see, and learn what you may not already know?

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.”Psalm 32:8-9
