Once again David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord answered him.
1 Samuel 23:4
I love reading the life story of King David in the Bible. If it were a movie, it would be labeled one of the greatest action, adventure, and drama movies around- experiencing Saul’s relentless pursuit of David, fuel by his jealous and murderous rage. Watching David’s many narrow escapes from Saul’s army as he passionately cries out to God for protection. Then to see him take his rightful place as king of Israel, only to fall into and an adulterous affair with Bathsheba and murder her husband to cover his sin. And to hear the words, “you are that man,” when the prophet Nathan confronts David leading him to accept the rebuke and confessed his sin. In spite of David’s many faults and failures, he was still a man after God’s own heart, and God unconditionally forgave him of his many sins.
David inquired of the Lord nine times in the books of first and second Samuel. His practice of continuously inquiring of the Lord is a beautiful model for our personal relationship with God.
God didn’t turn a deaf ear to David’s inquiry and He won’t turn a deaf ear to us when we pursue His will and way for our lives and seek His counsel and guidance. God knows our dilemmas and has compassion for our problems, and is always available– If we will just inquire.
It’s human nature to want an immediate answer to our problems, but God has specific purposes for the journey He leads us on if we will simply surrender our need to control and learn to trust him with our outcomes. God knows, He sees, and He deeply desires to answer us when we inquire of him.
We are wise to learn from David’s life story, as he made multiple inquiries of the Lord. David was a man of prayer who was intent on knowing God’s will. This is why he was called by God, “ a man after God’s own heart.”
“I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.” Acts 13: 22
May we desire to emulate David’s example and cultivate the habit of always inquiring of the Lord and waiting for His answer. Remember, the more we seek direction from God in prayer and the more we desire to know His will, the more He is honored, the more He will direct our paths, and the more we will be blessed.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:6
