Pursue Godly Wisdom

June 5, 2024

When you schedule time to read God’s Word, you accept God’s invitation to obtain godly wisdom. For example, in the book of Proverbs, Solomon writes words of wisdom for those living in Jerusalem during his reign as king. These wisdom writings provide instructions for daily life.

These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. Proverbs 1:1-3

What is your responsibility to obtain godly wisdom?

In Proverbs 2, Solomon describes some actions that are required for you to obtain wisdom. You must listen to what God says and place a high value on God’s commands (Proverbs 2:1). You must attune to wisdom by listening intently and removing distractions to concentrate on understanding what is wise (Proverbs 2:2). You must cry out to God for insight and ask for understanding (Proverbs 2:3). You must pursue wisdom like people seek financial riches and search for wisdom as for a hidden treasure (Proverbs 2:4).

What does God promise regarding wisdom?

When you take responsibility for pursuing wisdom,

Then, you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the Lord grants wisdom! From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to Him. Proverbs 2:5-8

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7

What does godly wisdom accomplish in your life?

Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe. Wisdom will save you from evil people, from those whose words are twisted. Proverbs 2:9-12

What’s the result of obtaining godly wisdom?

Solomon concludes Proverbs 2, describing what it looks like when you live out godly wisdom in your life in the presence of God. You will walk in the ways of the godly people around you. You will keep in the direction of those who are righteous before God (Proverbs 2:20). You will live in God’s presence now but also remain in His presence forever (Proverbs 2:21).
